" It takes a great deal of history to produce a little literature."

- Earnest Hemingway

We often give primary importance to science and relegate arts to obscurity. In an attempt to strike the right balance to science and the literary arts, this year Vidyalankar Institute of Technology initiated its first ever Literary Council. The responsibilities entrusted on this council included the publishing of the prestigious annual college magazine ‘Expressions’, initiating the annual Literary Fest, preparation of the quarterly e-newsletter ‘Vibes’ and also the newsletter ‘Vector’ in association with Mumbai Mirror and conducting other literary activities at regular intervals.

It has been a very active year for the Literary Council. The Council, for the sake of efficient functioning, has been further divided into the English Editorial team, Creative team, Events and Publicity team, Hindi and Marathi team, and the Sponsorship team. The Council’s foremost task was to create the Magazine which was completed in an orderly fashion, starting with the publicity, collection, selection and editing of articles and designing the layout. Expressions ’10 was unveiled amidst much fanfare on the day of Quintessence.

Apart from this, the Literary Council also conducted a spectrum of events. The e-newsletter ‘Vibes’ is a quarterly report of all the activities, accolades and events that take place at VIT and is made available on VIT’s official website. The newsletter ‘Vector’, of which three issues are published each semester in association with Mumbai Mirror, is circulated free among all Vidyalankar institutes for which students contribute articles. This year, we conducted ‘V the VITians’, which was a Group Discussion cum Debate on topics of current interest. To showcase the cause of immense popularity of the book ‘The Secret’, we screened the movie, and witnessed a good response. In the spirit of philanthropy, the Council also celebrated the Joy of Giving Week in which literary materials were collected and subsequently donated to the needy. And finally, we had a grand Marathi Diwas celebration on 5th March where students were dressed in traditional Maharashtrian clothes and sung and danced to Marathi folk songs in which the whole college participated enthusiastically.

The Literary Council has ushered in a new era on 17 March with Quintessence, the annual Literary Festival, which joins the ranks of the extremely popular Verve and Fervor. It was dedicated completely to literary events and structured to give a creative outlet to the minds of the young engineers, and also to develop their overall skills. The events that were held on this day were debate, elocution, aptitude tests, group discussions, word games, spelling bee and quiz to mention a few. This year, the magazine and the festival were great successes. All the members worked day and night to the best of their abilities and in a great spirit of camaraderie, and the results were commended by everybody. In the very first year of its inception, this Council has made a mark, by not only elating the magazine to the next level, but also by taking the bold step of starting a Literary Festival in an engineering college! It is said that the ability to communicate is what makes humans special. As this council flourishes, it will ensure that all the students of VIT better this basic skill of using languages effectively and celebrate and embark on new literary adventures.
