What started with baby steps in 2007, VIT Department of Management Studies has today emerged as a reputed Management Education department at the Mumbai university. VIT – Department of Management Studies, with its picturesque campus, state-of-the-art infrastructure, and meritorious students, continues to be one of the leaders in management education in the city.

The department encourages development of a co-operative outlook that recognises the value of sharing and mutual respect. This is emphasised in the value addition courses which are identified by studying the gaps between the prescribed syllabus and the current industry expectations through practical experiential learning as well as by example.

VIT Department of Management Studies, has produced numerous industry stalwarts and entrepreneurs, who have left a mark in the minds and hearts of the people they connect with.

VIT- Department of Management Studies currently offers a two-year full-time programme (master’s in management studies giving the options to specialize in Marketing, Finance, Operations, Systems and Human Resource affiliated by the University of Mumbai (Admission through the approved Entrance Tests) with an intake of 120 students per year.

About our Faculty

Faculty has a very significant role in the development of the Department of Management Studies at VIT. Today the total number of faculty in the department is over 50, Full time, Visiting and Guest Faculty included.

Faculty members esteemed in their respective fields for their knowledge, industry interaction, research and consulting are constantly engaged in knowledge creation and seek to expand horizons by participating in seminars and conferences both national and international. They are actively engaged in training and consultancy projects for companies in different functional areas on an ongoing basis.

Over the years the faculty has contributed to research and published and presented papers in both National and International conferences.

About Research Publications

The M.M.S department is headlong into research publications with a fair number of publications in high impact journals along with regular conference publications. The initiatives and innovations in Research are solely aimed at influencing industry practices which in turn are instrumental in re-shaping the existing business practices.

The department encourages a co-operative outlook of research that recognises the value of sharing knowledge mutually. This is emphasised in the regular sessions a on alternate Mondays where every faculty presents either a recently read research paper or a book or some technical innovations.

We have been presenting papers in various national and international conferences including the la-crème-de-la-crème being the international conferences hosted by I.I.M Kozhikode, I.I.M Ahmedabad , Nirma University and TISS. While faculty pursuing their doctoral programs from prestigious and research-oriented institutes like TISS; faculties are regularly invited to chairs paper presentations in various international conferences.

Student Achievements


Management department of VIT is amongst the prominent B Schools of the city which encourage students to participate in a lot of curricular and extracurricular activities. Our Students participated in a National Level Competition called ‘Manthan’ wherein the students were asked to provide solutions for 14 national challenges our country is facing. More than 7000 students participated from all over India including students from IITs and IIMs. Department Students got shortlisted in top 30 teams. The Eminent people like Mr. Narendra Modi. Mr. Arun Jaitley, Mr. Yogendra Yadav, Mr. Ram Jethmalani, Mr. Abhishek Manusanghvi and Mr. Chandrababu Naidu were Chief Guests for the event to whom students presented the solution.

Our students Won 1st prize in Inter Collegiate debate competition at IES College of Management. Students secured position in TOP 5 list in the event entitled” DIGIGRAM” hosted by Jamnalal Bajaj Institute of Management Studies.


Technical Activities

MMS department lays strong emphasis on a hands-on approach where students are given the essential practical exposure necessary to become a thorough professional through many activities such as

Industry Institute Interaction, Vangaurd - Case Study Competition, Workshop’s on Digital Marketing, Financial Modelling, Adhyayan – Book Review Competition, Learning through Short Film Making, Soft Skill Training and Samvad – a project presentation.

MMS department lays strong emphasis on a hands-on approach where students are given the essential practical exposure necessary to become a thorough professional through following:

• Industry Institute Interaction: Teaching learning processes are enhanced by integrating industry training to students. Hence, MMS department has Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the industries to promote education and entrepreneurship.
• Vangaurd - Case Study Competition: Case Study Analysis is a critical tool of education which brings out the innovative thinking in face of a real life challenge. Case study competitions as such are not a new concept. But Vidyalankar has taken up the responsibility to bring a change in this concept. Real Life Case study from corporate which incorporates multiple perspectives. The competition is open to Management Schools, Engineering Colleges, Undergrad colleges as well as Corporates teams.
• Workshop on Digital Marketing: Digital Marketing is indispensable for branding & marketing in today’s world. It has become necessary for organizations to tap this medium to reach to its customers/target segment. Thus, we provide this workshop on Digital Marketing for students to know the various features & tools of this vast medium and how the same can be used to provide effective and efficient solutions for business growth.
• Workshop on Financial Modelling: Financial Modeling training is one of the most sought after training modules in the Banking and Financial industry. This workshop on Equity Research and Financial Modeling will be helpful for students in various business activities by Investment Banks, Equity Research firms, Credit Rating Agencies, Private Equity/ Venture Capitalist, Banks, Consultancy Firms, Corporate Finance.
• Adhyayan - Book Review Competition: MMS department hosts their annual book review competition - ‘Adhyayan’ that engages the students in a unique way by inculcating in them the habit of reading books. It helps them in developing strong analytical thinking, and engaging them in the treasury world of literature. The students are assigned management books to read. Based on their interpretation, they prepare and present a glimpse of their comprehension by using any intellectual tools available at their disposal.
• Learning through Short Film Making: We combine the learning with a source of entertainment and transcend the traditional methods of teaching. FLICKRFEST- the movie screening is a short film festival by the first-year management students of MMS. The beauty of art lies in its purest form, which happens to be cinema, and FLICKRFEST endeavors to bring that thought to life.
• Soft Skills Training: The comprehensive courses are designed in the critical areas of communication skills, professional grooming, time management, corporate etiquette training and personality development. These training modules enable the learners to improve their soft skills proficiency.
• Samvad – Project Presentation: MMS department pioneers at providing and motivating their students to display their enormous talent. Samvad is one such platform provided to MMS students, to showcase their efforts of sixty days summer internship project (SIP) in the most innovative manner through poster presentations, charts and models.

Students Projects

MMS department lays great emphasis on Project-based learning. It is a student-centered pedagogy that involves a dynamic classroom approach in which it is believed that students acquire a deeper knowledge through active exploration of real-world challenges and problems. Students learn about a subject by working for an extended period of time to investigate and respond to a complex question, challenge, or problem.

The department collaborates with industries, external agencies, government, and non-government organisations to expose students to higher levels of problem solving through project activities.

For industry feedback on project quality, external panellists who are industry experts are invited for conducting project viva-voce and they provide their valuable suggestions and inputs to students and faculty members regarding enhancing the quality further. This way the quality is enhanced every year.

Internships

‘Internships’ are the beginning of a student’s career and more so in management education. Internships are an opportunity for students to work in the area of their interest and allows the students to pursue their career goals. It gives a preview of the roles, responsibilities, and the nature of work that the students would be undertaking once they graduate from a business school. At Vidyalanakar, internship is a brief, 2 months, learning oriented work experience with an organisation that is completed between first and second year of MBA program. We believe that internship with a good organisation with a practical work experience add great value to a student’s resume and gives an edge at the time of job placements.

We have been consistent in placing 100% of our students for internships in sectors such as; banking and Financial Institutions, FMCG, Retail, Manufacturing, Logistics and supply chain, E-commerce and E-Trade, Government and allied sectors. The eminent organisations having participated in internship drive at Vidyalankar are; HDFC, AMUL, Shoppers Stop, Big Bazar, India Infoline, Future Generali, BPCL, HPCL, ONGC, Shipping Corporation, Mahindra and Mahindra, to name a few.

At VIT – Department of Management Studies, it is our belief that experiences of corporate leaders provide invaluable learning to the students of management. The department saw the most successful managers, leaders, and thinkers descend on campus during the previous academic years.

While students keen on pursuing academic careers have enrolled for doctorates in prestigious institutes like TISS(Ms. Smita Mukherjee), many have pursued Master’s programs like M.S in finance in universities like Austin, Texas etc. Students have pursued higher education in diverse fields in international universities in U.S.A, New Zealand etc.

All B-schools aspire to expose their students to state-of-the-art industry practice. VIT- Department of Management Studies does so in a way that sets it apart. In addition to guest lectures, field visits, live projects, and internships, the MMS programme also offers the following unique opportunities, VIT Vanguard Case Study Competition, Student Professional Development Cell, International Company Visits, Live Projects Industry collaboration also enables B-schools to design niche value added courses in emerging and futuristic sectors and provide necessary job skills development resources to students. We at VIT – Management studies department have a close tie up with Single Window Services, NSDL, Just Dial and Mahindra and Mahindra.

We are associated with Bombay Management Association as interns which help them to understand and get an opportunity to work in a professional environment. Internship is a great tool to improve their chances as a job applicant and help them make a better potential employee. Students handle the Entire IT Setup at the conclave, the coordination with guests, hospitality and the overall arrangements. Students are part of the core team for organizing and conducting the various activities for events, conclaves and Annual awards at BMA. Mr. Deven Bhuwad and Mr. Siddhant Worlikar from Department of Management Studies, VIT received the Salver during the AGM of BMA for continuous support in arranging various activities for corporates and institutions. Indian Merchants Chamber collaboration equips students and faculty members with practical benefits to help them grow and achieve professional goals. Regularly students and faculty members attend networking events, connect on various social media handles and join a special interest group to learn more about topics they are interested in or passionate about.

Entrepreneurship Cell

The Entrepreneurship cell was created with the sole vision and mission of promoting the concept of entrepreneurship on campus to help nurture the hidden enterprising bug of the student to come forth and germinate the seed of an modern enterprise/ Start-up.

At Vidyalankar E-cell, we have made fulfilling our students dreams our own. The department’s landmark Achievement is that we, E-cell, VIT a stood first at the national level in the National Entrepreneurship Challenge conducted by IIT, Bombay and won many challenges in business plan competitions.

Our start-ups comprise of companies ranging from exporters of ethnic footwear to I.T solutions developers to companies developing GPS solutions for the School buses and other commercial vehicles.

We are once again to proud to say that our alumni are fulfilling that Vacuum! Our start-ups range from tech start-ups to exporters to Social entrepreneurs. To name some of our Students Start-up Desi Hangover experts ethnic footwears started by Mr. Hitesh Kenjale and Mr. Abhimanyu Kucheria has started a company which Develops GPS systems for public transport vehicles.

Summer Internships

Summer Internships have grown to become an important criterion to judge a B-School’s competitiveness.
